you may think I’m a fool for spending my days in front of a screen instead of reading books, going to classes, finding a job… well contribute to the economy.
I know we’re not from the same generation but why do I feel like you’re not listenning to me? You’re not even trying to understand me. Today you’re defending “copyright” like a knight in a shinning armor but you would also be the first one to kill it if it could help your friends to make bigger profits.
Don’t you understand that I’m the one buying music, buying DVDs, going to the movie theatre or just to the theatre or a concert because of what I’ve seen, listened to on my computer? Don’t you understand I’m the one who’s making all the Lady Gaga and Lana Del Rey or whatever next big movie, I’m the one who’s giving Chuck another season, etc… I’ve discovered and spent more money on this than I would have without the internet. I would have never seen Friday Night Lights or The West Wing or Doctor Who. How many people I know or not gave me advice to watch, read or listen to something they love, shared their passion with me and made my world a little bit better? I may have never felt in love again with the world of Harry Potter if I haven’t met the fandom online, all those people who shared their artwork, the news, the quotes…
Seriously I’m the one spending hours looking for new things, trying, experimenting and if I like what I’ve found, I’m gonna buy it. It’s like a car: you try it before you buy it. And I don’t have the money to afford all the stuff I like.
And don’t you think those people who’s asking for SOPA and others are the one who are using the internet too? All these “leaks” before an album is released, I’m a bit suspicious… And don’t you think an obscure band from Texas is not worth the time I’m spending on it because they’re not signed by a big label?
Don’t tell me I’m a pirate. Because you were one before me: didn’t you record songs on the radio on tapes or what was on tv on VHS? The internet is such a wonderful invention: you can track down people, know where they are. But if it was like this when you were young, would you have accepted to see your freedom taken away from you (it feels like this. I won’t compare it to a dictatorship because they are people dying for this and it’s a far worse situation but you get the idea).
And did you not go to the library to discover new things? Internet is my generation library (and I love a good old library don’t get me wrong).
And remember, you tried Prohibition. IT DIDN’T WORK.
